Celebrating the Power of Young Voices

A public exhibition of art and writing by young people across Western Massachusetts

Art Speaks believes young people have something to say.

Art Speaks gives young people a chance to be seen, heard and taken seriously. By bringing their creative work into public spaces, we invite the whole community to pause, look, discuss and reflect. When we value young people’s contributions, they thrive. When we bring art to communities, they thrive too. Art Speaks brings these forces together.

Art Speaks is an annual juried exhibition of art and writing.

Art Speaks empowers young people across Western Massachusetts to share their unique stories and perspectives about the issues of our times through art and the written word. By showcasing their creativity in a public exhibit, we celebrate diversity, inspire connection and strengthen a sense of belonging for all. Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin County students in grade 6 through college are invited to participate.

Art Speaks is rooted in the Pioneer Valley.

Art Speaks takes place where community life happens—parks, public spaces, and gathering places throughout Western Massachusetts. The exhibition is being developed in collaboration with schools, educators, youth organizations, and young people throughout the region and will travel to Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin Counties.

Art Speaks has an experienced and committed board.

Portrait of Claudia Levin

Claudia Levin

Founder & Executive Director

Claudia Levin spent much of her career as Senior Producer/Project Manager at Monadnock Media, a nonprofit company specializing in the design and production of multimedia experiences for museums. She produced orientation experiences, interactive environments, and immersive installations for major museums and cultural institutions including: the Smithsonian’s Museum of African American History and Culture, the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Civil Rights Memorial Center, the FDR Presidential Library and Museum, the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum, among many others.

Across those projects, the through-line was the same conviction that drives Art Speaks: to tell powerful stories that celebrate and uplift all voices and help move people toward empathy, justice, and connection.

With Art Speaks she brings her experience creating large-scale public installations to a new stage—one built by and for the young people of Western Massachusetts.

Keta Cowan specializes in drafting legislation, government program policy and representing the legal rights of vulnerable and marginalized communities in civil and criminal cases. She investigates claims of discrimination as an Ann Arbor Human Rights Commissioner and is Principal Consultant for Human Rights in Action.
